Couch Tarts - A San Jose Sharks Fan Blog

Written by Gray | 23 January 2011

I'm going to keep this short.

My feelings about Nabby not reporting to the Islanders are as follows:

Hey, at least he's being honest. While I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, it's clear that he had one goal, and that goal was Detroit. He's not dicking the Isle fans around, he's straight up saying he doesn't want to play there.

Maybe he is a princess, but no one said professional athletes have to like the team that claims them on waivers. While apparently saying any team was fine and then not going to the one who claimed him is a dick move,  he's not contractually bound to report if he doesn't want to. It certainly doesn't endear him to anyone, but he has his mind set on on goal, and he's going to do what he feels is best to get there. Fans disagreeing or not.

This is no reason to shit on San Jose. I saw a lot of (mostly divisional) SJ hate yesterday. You want to hate SJ, then do it but don't use Nabby as an excuse to shit all over us. Just because your smug about your team being better now doesn't mean you actually accomplished anything other than making yourself look like an ass. Take your poo party elsewhere. There's already enough crap on the internet.

Sharks v Wild
Whoo! We finally beat the elusive Wild! In season's past the issue with the Wild has been that "IT'S A TRAP!" and the game was so slow glaciers would melt faster than a team could get through the neutral zone. Now days, the Wild are much faster, and far more annoying. Having a former asst. coach for the Sharks as their head coach has improved their play and their ability to annoy to a rather large degree. Add in what has bene a really weird season of San Jose, and you have all the ingredients for a new menace.

With both teams coming in on three game win streaks, you knew it was going to be a hard fought night. Neither side would want to lose.

Seriously, folks, how clutch is Logan Couture?

Joe Pavelski is super clutch

Thanks, JoePa. He IS super clutch. And you should know, being super clutch yourself.

Seto scored 2 goals to get off his epicly long seasonal schneid. Benn (or as I have taken to calling him, "Benry") Ferriero also scored a goal.

The Sharks once again had an absolutely dominate second period. If they can figure out how to start that way int he first and sustain it, the rest of the West better watch out. That 8 spot is nice, but the Sharks ain't stopping there.

Nemo may have let in some softies, but he also made some killer saves. He's really turned it on lately and it's been really nice to see. (what did I say about him needing time to adjust?)

For everyone who spent the first half doubting this team, we're finally seeing the type of play I always knew they had in them. They're only going to get better as the season goes on. They have a goal, they have to fight to make the playoffs. You want adversity? This is just the type the Sharks need. Don't be surprised when they sneak their way into the post season.

Sharks v Canuckleheads

Tonight @ 7pm
CSNCA and 98.5 KFOX
have you covered

Why do hockey guys always look like they're taking bad driver's license photos in their mug shots? The new ones for Wellwood and Ben Eager, both newly acquired members of the San Jose Sharks, make them look confused and kinda disgusted respectively. Only Dan Boyle is like "Hey, I play for an NHL team!" *smile*

Weird.

Interestingly enough Wellwood's first game as a Shark will be against his old team. That has to be slightly awkward. Well, no more so than skating on the ice with the Blues after a long flight in from Russia, only to discover you're now a Shark. Waivers, man, waivers.
Fat jokes aside, it will be interesting to see how the two newest faces do on the ice tonight. The Canucks have become the team to beat, and the Sharks will need to do all they can to get 2 points out of the game tonight. Laugh all you want, it's not impossible. Sure, we don't have a great blue line, and Clowe and Nichol are both out, but we can so do this. Make it 3 boys.

With luck, I'll be able to catch the game in its entirity tonight and post a recap. This entry is anemic considering all that went on this week, but someone had to go a schedule a 9am meeting and if you know anything about  traffic in CA, you know that it blows. As much as I might be tempted to blog while sitting, unmoving, in a sea of metal and humanity, I've been told they kinda frown upon that sort of activity.

Sharks v Yotes

Today @ 1pm!
CSNCA and 98.5 KFOX
1000 Games! Go Patty!

So if, unlike me, you have the day off, I'd suggest sleeping in, rolling out of bed around noon thirty, and settling in on the couch with a cup a Joe in hand and enjoy the show. I will be doing my best to listen in from work. Today's a great day to start a new streak. A win streak. A like 55 game win streak. Or 60 or really whatever it takes to get us to the promised land. I don't care that there are under 40 games left in the regular season. That Sharks are going to win like 100 million between now and June.

By the way, it's a special day for one Shark.

Patrick Marleau, 1000 games of awkward

Loooookkkk attt my eyebrows!

Can you believe it? 1000 games of the most awkwardly adorable former Captain the Sharks have ever had. No matter how many buses fans threw you under, no matter how much they challenged your "heart", no matter how many times you stared concerned, and maybe even slightly confused into the camera, you did it as a member of Team Teal. You didn't complain, you just were your normal, awesome, awkward self. We less than three ya, Patty. Here's to 1000 more games with San Jose.

And now, in honor of his 1000 NHL game, here are some facts* about Patrick Marleau's eyebrows:

Patrick Marleau's eyebrows are licensed to kill in 13 states and all of Canada.

Once beat up Alexi Semenov.

Are actually caterpillars.

Wanted in 30 countries.

Patrick Marleau's eyebrows were once Emperor of Japan.

They speak 7 lanagues. Fluently.

You could hide Marc-Edouard Vlasic in them.

Rob Blake once rented them out for the weekend.

Possible location for/current form of the Wonder Twins.

Have their own zip code.

Are honored with nightly rituals in their native Canada.

Can see dead people.

Sharks v Blues
Tonight @7:30pm

Bakes is Good
Bakes is Wise
Bakes will tell use where common sense lies

The bloggings will continue until morale improves!

Look, Sharks fans, I know this sucks. It blows. It reeks. It smells of elderberries. I get it. I do, but as I said on Twitter during the last game "I just don't like making it worse by shitting all over the team in front of other frustrated fans." Really, what will that do? Make you angrier? Make me look cool for being all aggro? Or make me look like an idiot when the Sharks do start winning again and I forget I ever said anything terrible and fawn over them like nothing every happened?

Exactly.

This sucks, but this is the sort of thing that tests every fan base from time to time. You know why people keep making those Stanley Cup comments you hate so much? Why they keep trying to pick everyone up? So you don't freak the eff out! They support the team, in some cases they work for the team, and their job is to keep morale up and give fans hope.

Injuries have impacted the team's ability to fight back. A lack of belief in their own skills has hurt them. A lack of faith from fans isn't helping (but we get it, frustrations are totally valid.), the downward spiral may continue.

Then again, it may not.

Any night could be the night our Sharks, the Sharks we know and love, the Sharks we know this team can be, spring back to life. They are not done. The season is not dead. Do not go quietly into the dark teal night! Fight, fight, fight against the dying of the playoff light!

Go Sharks!

Mina edit:
For this game we need to go back to an old standby.  Hit it hockey hippo!

do it or the baby gets it

Sharks v Oilers

I had a lot planned for this post, like handing our the Bringer of Doom Award to idunno723, for his tweet about the Leafs not beating the Sharks on home ice in 14 years. To describe the utter revolution at letting RW win game 600 on our ice, (it's still great for him and I am happy for his accomplishment but not on our ice!), how tired I am getting of losing and the loss of sanity that comes with it. How this is the worst losing streak for the Sharks since 96-97.

But all that was rendered completely incoseqeuntial when reader Emily sent us this video.

Enjoy, Sharks fans. Go Sharks! no comments

Sharks v Maple Leafs
Tonight @ 7:30pm
CSNCA and 98.5 KFOX have your gametime coverage
hehehehe golfing bear

There are few things more depressing in the sports world then a slump. A team that can win, can't. Goals that can be scored aren't. Goalies that can be beat have forcefields. A team that should believe does not. A fan base desperate for wins sees only loss. Hope fades. Crowds dwindle. The only things that seems to increase are anger and the amount of empty seats in the arena. What does one do when faced with such dire straights in the middle of a season? Where does one go to regain hope?

The only place one can.

A game against the Leafs.

It's not a sure fire win by any means, but the odds of losing to the Leafs are far less than say, losing to the stupid Ducks or Red Wings. Add in the benefit of sticking it to Ron Wilson, and you have yourself a slump busting recipe.

slump buster receipe

Worst juju ever, right there. Reverse jinx. I am doing it.

Sharks v Ducks

Another early game (5pm start), another chance for the Sharks to show that all the talks they have been having as a group will eventually pay off. They played decently for about half the game last night, but some of their mistakes were atrocious, and it became clear that there were only a few guys on home ice who wanted to win. It was frustrating to watch. I have seen the Sharks win that game, I have seen last second ties and come backs, I have seen the impossible happen numerous times on that ice. For whatever reason, despite all the chatter to the contrary, the Sharks just could not get the job done last night. I told Mina it occasionally is difficult to be the one person offering support and trying to keep belief in the team going when they keep shitting the bed.

I still have hope though. Skids can't last forever, (ignore the Islanders, ignore the Islanders...oh HAI Jersey...) and despite some ah, weak points in the defense, this team has all the pieces, skill and the ability to be really, really, really good.

Someone just needs to get them to believe it.

#throwthegrits tonight, Sharks fans. Show the Duckies who's boss.

Sharks v Preds

Tonight at 5pm (early start!)
CSNCA and 98.5 KFOX

I don't have a lot of time to write today's gameday, so I'm going to leave it at this; the Sharks will win tonight. Not because of the locker room talk, not because they're all pissed off and frustrated, amd not because it's time to kick this season into gear. No, they will win tonight because it's my birthday and I have tickets to the game. I will be there. They will win for me. Because if they don't, how lame a birthday present would that be? no comments
