That Was Ridiculous
So I'd like to think the following conversation occurred on the ice in the last 30 seconds of the game:
"Hey, you know what would be good?"
"What?"
"Letting the Blues tie!"
"Really?!"
"Oh come on, it will add DRAMA! Get the fans all hyped. We can take them in OT."
"OK!"
The really sad thing about that is that until the last 30 seconds, the game was pretty good. Better than billed. The Blues were playing well, the Sharks were shooting like mad, Conblock was in effect, control of the game was back and forth...it was entertaining. Fun, even. But the the Sharks decided to end the game before it was over and didn't really do much ti protect their lead in the waning seconds of the game. And what happens? Blues scores with 6.6 left. Nabby makes some stellar saves only to watch his guys leave him high and dry. He was pissed. Breaking locker room tradition, he called Vlasic out for not blocking a shot. He made it clear that he though the guys in front of him weren't doing their job. He didn't lay all the blame on them, but he was (IMO) right to call out his team. You just can't give up like that.
Just watch the post game quotes from last night. Say what you will about Nabby calling Vlasic out, he has some good points.
I disagree with Pickles that last night was the most disappointing loss of the season. I can think of a worse one.
You may have seen me tossing around the term "globetrotting" on Twitter last night. That comes direct from Coach Todd. It refers to the top line basically being on the ice and skating around while simultaneously being wholly ineffective. Forwards standing in the corner in last minute, as Todd said. Check. Not very effective.
Not going to get into that who "adversity" riff. I think sometimes you just make mistakes and those lead to you losing a game you basically had wrapped up. That's sports. The idea is to get in a groove where those missteps aren't made, or are at least made with less regularity, so you can win more often than not.
I believe this is the second time this season we've handed this out. For their performance last night, the Sharks stat guys get the RANDY HAHN BRINGER OF DOOM Award. Any time you bring up a stat that could jinx things, you've jinxed things. Thanks guys! This is for you.
